Miri is perceived as a shopping or entertainment destination more than anything else. Sarawak's second largest city is the gateway to a myriad of natural treasures.
Miri is a bustling oil town and commercial centre, and the major entry point for Northeast Sarawak. Miri is connected by air and road to all of Sarawak's major towns, and is half a day's drive or a 40-minute flight from Brunei. Other air links include Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. The town has a wide range of accommodation catering to luxury and budget travelers, some decent beaches nearby, and dozens of good restaurants, pubs and bars.
Miri may only have some 150,000 inhabitants, but the first impression this city gives to visitors is of a big metropolis.
The brand new air terminal launched by the Prime Minister July 2005 is statement enough. Its "wavy" roof and large columns resemble the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). From the airport to the city, traffic is continuous and filters to the new suburbs. When you finally reach the city centre, urban life is more than apparent.
Miri is brash and crowded - both day and night. Shopping centers replace more and more traditional Chinese shops. Expatriates are visible in malls, pubs and bars, affirming Miri as a cosmopolitan destination. It is not surprising the city is the heartbeat of Sarawak's oil industry - oil brought fortune to Miri.
NIAH NATIONAL PARK
